Getting started

How do I set it up?

Drag No Mouse Mode into your Applications folder and open it. A short setup walks you through the one macOS permission it needs, Accessibility (the page updates by itself once it's switched on), asks for your license key, shows you the two ways to use it, then lets you try it for real. You can open the full Practice (nine short lessons) from the menu bar icon any time.

Nothing happens when I press Cmd+Shift+M

Check that No Mouse Mode is running: you should see its cursor icon in the menu bar. If it is, another app may be using the same shortcut. Open the menu bar icon, choose Settings… and record a different toggle shortcut. If the license isn't activated yet, the app asks for your key first.

It asks for Accessibility or Input Monitoring permission

macOS requires these for any app that moves the cursor from the keyboard. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility and switch on No Mouse Mode, then do the same under Input Monitoring if it's listed. Then quit and reopen the app. Here's exactly what the app does with these permissions.

Permission is switched on but it still doesn't work

Select No Mouse Mode in the Accessibility list, remove it with the – button, then add it back with + (it's in your Applications folder) and reopen the app. This resets a permission entry that macOS sometimes keeps from an older copy of the app.

"This app requires a newer version of macOS"

Version 1.0 only ran on the newest macOS. Current versions run on macOS 14 (Sonoma) and newer. Download the latest version from nomousemode.com/download and replace the copy in your Applications folder.

Your license

Where do I enter my license key?

The setup asks for it the first time you open the app. You can also open the menu bar icon, choose Settings… and go to License. Paste the key and click Activate. Activation needs an internet connection; after that the app works offline.

Where do I find my license key?

It's shown on the page you land on after checkout, and it's in the email from Dodo Payments (check spam if it isn't in your inbox). Version 1 was sold on Gumroad; those purchases need no key on the Mac you already use. Can't find it? Email us with the address you used to buy.

Which license do I need?

One license key works on as many Macs as you bought it for: 1 Mac ($19.99), 3 Macs ($49.99), 5 Macs ($79.99) or 20 Macs ($299.99). Each is a one-time purchase with free updates. Pick the number of Macs you use at the same time; you can always move a license from an old Mac to a new one with Deactivate, so a new Mac doesn't need a new license. See pricing.

How do I move my license to another Mac?

On the old Mac, open Settings… → License and click Deactivate. Then activate the same key on the new Mac. If the old Mac is gone or broken, email us and we'll free up the license for you.

I bought No Mouse Mode before version 2.0

Thank you! It keeps working on the Mac you already use it on, with no key needed, and the update is free. For a new Mac, email adgan.business@gmail.com with the email address you bought with.

Using No Mouse Mode

What are the keys?

W A S DMove the cursor. It speeds up the longer you hold.
Shift (hold)Fast
Q (hold)Precision: slow and pixel-exact
SpaceClick. Tap twice to double-click, three times to triple-click. Hold and move to drag.
ReturnRight-click
↑ ↓Scroll up and down
← →Scroll left and right
MMiddle click
[ ]Back and forward (a mouse's side buttons)
FClick labels
/Type to click
JScroll areas
EJump grid
TabNext display (Shift+Tab: previous)
1–9Jump to a saved spot. Shift and the number saves one.
`Jump back to where the cursor was before its last jump
HShow every key

Turn it on and off with Cmd+Shift+M. These work anywhere, even while it's off: Cmd+Shift+Space click labels, Cmd+Shift+/ type to click, Cmd+Shift+J scroll areas. Every key and shortcut can be changed in Settings.

How does the jump grid work?

Press E. The screen with the cursor splits into a 3×3 grid labelled Q W E / A S D / Z X C, the same shape as those keys on your keyboard. Press a letter and the cursor jumps to the middle of that cell, then the grid zooms into it; two or three presses reach anywhere. Press Space to click there or Return to right-click, Delete to go back a level, Tab to move the grid to your next display, or Esc to close it. You can still fine-tune with W A S D afterwards.

How do click labels work?

Press Cmd+Shift+Space (or F while No Mouse Mode is on) and every clickable thing in the front window (buttons, links, tabs, menus, checkboxes and fields), the menu bar and the Dock gets a short letter label. Type the letters and it's clicked. Hold a key while typing the last letter for a different click: Shift right-clicks, Command Command-clicks (a new tab in browsers), Option double-clicks and Control only moves the cursor there. Tab keeps the labels coming back after each click. Esc cancels.

Labels work in Mac apps and on web pages that describe their buttons to macOS, which most do. If an app shows few or no labels, turn on Also read text on the screen in Settings → Clicking, or use the jump grid or W A S D, which work everywhere.

How does type to click work?

Press Cmd+Shift+/ (or / while it's on) and start typing what a button or a piece of text says. Case, spaces and accents don't matter, and first letters work too ("nf" finds New Folder). Matches are outlined; Tab moves between them and Return clicks. Shift+Return right-clicks, Command+Return Command-clicks and Option+Return double-clicks.

How do scroll areas work?

Press Cmd+Shift+J (or J while it's on). Each scrollable part of the front window gets a number and the cursor moves into the first one. Pick another with its number or Tab. Then hold the arrow keys or J/K to scroll (Shift for faster), Space to page down, Shift+Space to page up, T for the top and B for the bottom. Esc when you're done.

Labels and type to click find nothing in one app

Some apps (certain games, design canvases, remote desktops and older cross-platform apps) don't tell macOS where their buttons are. Turn on Also read text on the screen in Settings → Clicking and allow Screen Recording in System Settings → Privacy & Security when asked; you may need to quit and reopen No Mouse Mode afterwards. It reads the words on screen on your Mac and never saves or sends them. Buttons that are only icons still need the jump grid or W A S D.

Can I use it just while holding a key?

Yes. In Settings, turn on hold-to-use and choose Right Command or Right Option. Hold that key, use the mouse keys, and let go to switch back. It's off by default, and Cmd+Shift+M still works either way.

I can't type while it's on

That's expected for the keys it uses: while No Mouse Mode is on they control the mouse. When you click into a text box it switches itself off so you can type (you can turn that off in Settings → General). Press Cmd+Shift+M to switch it off yourself, use hold-to-use so it's only on while you hold a key, or use the anywhere shortcuts, which never need it on.

Can it stay off in certain apps?

Yes. Add apps in Settings → Apps, or choose Turn Off Automatically in … from the menu bar icon while you're in the app. It switches itself off whenever one of them is in front and back on when you leave. Turning it on by hand still works.

I forgot a key

Press H while No Mouse Mode is on to see every key at the bottom of the screen, or open Keyboard Guide or Practice from the menu bar icon.

Do keyboard shortcuts still work?

Yes. Any shortcut using Command, Control or Option (like Cmd+S, Cmd+W or Ctrl+→) goes straight to your apps, even while No Mouse Mode is on.

How do I double-click, right-click or drag?

Tap Space twice quickly to double-click (three times to triple-click). Press Return to right-click. To drag, hold Space, move with W A S D, then release Space.

The cursor is too slow or too fast

Hold Shift for a burst of speed or Q for slow, precise movement. To change the normal speed, open Settings… from the menu bar icon and adjust the speed settings there.

Can I change the keys?

Yes. Every key and every shortcut can be changed in Settings. Click a field, then press the key you want. Restore Defaults puts them all back.

Does it work with more than one display?

Yes. The cursor moves across all your displays, Tab jumps to the middle of the next one, and the badge and grid appear on the display the cursor is on. Labels appear wherever the front window is. In the jump grid, Tab moves the grid to the next display.

Updates, login and removal

How do I update?

Version 2.0 and later update themselves automatically. Updates are free. You can also check by hand: open the menu bar icon and choose Check for Updates…. If you're on version 1.x, download the latest version from nomousemode.com/download, quit No Mouse Mode from its menu bar icon, and drag the new copy into your Applications folder, replacing the old one.

Can it start when I log in?

Yes. Turn on Open No Mouse Mode at login in Settings → General.

How do I uninstall it?

If you might use your license on another Mac later, first open Settings… → License and click Deactivate. Then choose Quit from the menu bar icon and drag No Mouse Mode from Applications to the Trash. You can also remove it from the Accessibility, Input Monitoring and Screen Recording lists in System Settings.
